Jeff Bezos is building a giant clock that will run for 10,000 years

Jeff Bezos, one of the world's wealthiest individuals, continues to make unique investments. The idea for a clock that would run for 10,000 years was first proposed in the 1980s by computer scientist Danny Hillis. In an article he wrote for WIRED Magazine in 1995, Hillis explained the concept, stating, "I want to build a clock that ticks once a year. The century hand advances once every 100 years, and the cuckoo comes out on the millennium. If I hurry, I might finish the clock in time to see the cuckoo come out for the first time."

THE IDEA BEGAN TO DEVELOP AND BE BUILT

To advance this idea, Hillis partnered with Stewart Brand and founded the Long Now Foundation. Later, Bezos invested 42 million dollars because he wanted to develop the concept. The purpose of building this monumental clock is to serve as a symbol of long-term thinking.

The 10,000-year clock will be hundreds of meters tall. No detailed statement has been made yet regarding this clock, which is planned to be built into a mountain in West Texas. However, the clock will be designed to last for a long time and, in addition to large dials, will also feature a chime designed by ambient music master Brian Eno.

Installation of the clock began in 2018. Furthermore, the clock will contain five room-sized anniversary chambers, one for each of the 1st, 10th, 100th, 1,000th, and 10,000th anniversaries.
