The mysterious object on China's spacecraft that crashed into the Moon!
US scientists say a spacecraft that crashed into the lunar surface last year was carrying an unidentified object.
Researchers from Arizona State University examined the impact craters created by a rocket booster that fell onto the celestial body on March 4, 2022, and was later identified as belonging to China.
Initially, the rocket part in question was thought to belong to a Falcon 9 rocket left in orbit by Elon Musk's space company, SpaceX, in 2015. However, it was soon revealed to be a booster launched by China in 2014 as part of the Chang'e 5-T1 lunar exploration program.
IT CREATED TWO CRATERS
According to the report by Independent Türkçe, researchers who analyzed the collision in more detail noticed that this rocket part created two craters at the moment of impact. The team behind the study, published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal The Planetary Science Journal, had also observed the rocket part before the collision.
Finally, by analyzing the trail left by the part and its movement in space, the team concluded, based on the features they observed, that the rocket was carrying a mysterious payload on the lunar surface that was destroyed by the impact.
Lead author of the study Tanner Campbell said, "This is the first time we've seen a double crater."
We know that to get these two craters of roughly the same size in the Chang'e 5-T1 example, you would need two roughly equal masses.
The research team, which measured the changes in light reflection that occurred during the rocket's movement, also detected an anomaly in the way the part fell to the Moon.
Campbell stated, "It should have been wobbling a bit":
But this part is falling in a very stable way.
This situation suggests that there was another object acting as a counterweight to the engines used to keep the part stable in orbit.
The object is thought to have been mounted on the front of the booster.
"Honestly, we have no idea what it could be," said Campbell, adding:
Maybe an extra support, an additional device, or something else. We will probably never know.
