Produced in 30 minutes, it carried over 907 kilograms of load
A 3D-printed concrete bridge developed at MIT in the US has opened a new chapter in engineering with a load test that exceeded its own weight. Produced in just half an hour, the bridge stood out for its durability and sustainability.
As a result of research conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, a bridge produced using a 3D printer with concrete has been the subject of a remarkable experiment. The structure, which is approximately 2.3 meters long, was tested with a load of 907 kilograms—more than its own weight—and successfully remained standing.
No molds were needed in the production of the bridge. Completed as a single piece in a short time of approximately 30 minutes, the concrete bridge was presented as an example that could pave the way for wider use of advanced 3D printing technologies in the construction sector.
During the design process, the research team considered not only structural durability but also the limits of current 3D printing devices. By using innovative computational methods, concrete was placed only where necessary. This aimed to both save material and reduce carbon emissions caused by concrete.
During the tests, the bridge's performance was very close to the predictions previously made with computer models. Scientists stated that the main limitation is not the durability of the concrete, but the capacity of current 3D printers. It is stated that thanks to this technology, which is open to development, larger and different structures could be built in the future with less concrete usage and a more environmentally friendly approach.
This new method is considered to have the potential to offer fast, economical, and sustainable construction processes not only for bridges but also for building and infrastructure projects.
