Terrifying moments on a plane: It suddenly caught fire

On a China Eastern Airlines passenger flight from Lanzhou to Guiyang in China, an unexpected incident occurred in the cabin after landing. Flames suddenly erupted from the overhead luggage compartment. Investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a portable charger (power bank) located in a passenger's carry-on luggage.

Shortly after the plane touched down at Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport, smoke began to rise. During the incident, cabin crew acted quickly to open the overhead bin, remove the passengers' suitcases, and extinguish the fire. The fire was put out in a short time, preventing a greater danger. However, the passengers in the cabin experienced a brief moment of alarm.

Initial assessments regarding the matter determined that the power bank that caused the fire had overheated and ignited on its own. Experts warned that lithium-ion batteries can pose a risk of abnormal heating and explosion, known as "thermal runaway," especially in cases of impact, manufacturing defects, low quality, or internal short circuits in the battery.

Pointing out that battery fires can have dangerous consequences in air transport, authorities state that passengers must carry portable chargers and electronic devices safely in the cabin. It is emphasized that such devices are sensitive to temperature and impact, and that any suspicious situation must be reported to the staff immediately.
