Where does the origin of life on Earth come from?

The origins of life on Earth have been one of the great mysteries for which an answer has been sought throughout history. For many years, scientists looked to the stars, believing that the building blocks that started life on our planet came from an asteroid, comet, or meteorite. But now, some scientists say that the true origins of life on Earth may have always been right here, on Earth.

As reported by Chip, a new article shared in Science Advances, along with research published in The Conversation, examines the question of whether the origin of life on our planet might have been right beside us all this time. Researchers participating in this intriguing approach to finding where life began on our planet say that the elements that make life possible, known as volatiles, may have been present on Earth from the very beginning.

IT MAY HELP US UNDERSTAND THE ORIGIN OF LIFE ON EARTH

Various elements, including carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and a group of elements researchers call chalcogens, are considered volatile. All these volatiles, including sulfur, selenium, and tellurium, evaporate more easily than other elements, and understanding how these substances came to Earth could help us understand the origin of life on Earth as well.

One of the most common theories, known as the late veneer theory, states that Earth was initially composed of materials with a low concentration of volatiles. However, later, as volatile-rich objects (meteorites, comets, asteroids) struck the planet's surface, allowing the planet to fully form, higher concentrations of volatiles began to appear.

However, the problem with this theory is that these volatile-rich objects make up only half a percent of Earth's mass. Therefore, most of these elements must have arrived on our planet some time after the formation of Earth's core. The new research, however, suggests that these volatiles have always been a part of Earth and that the elements necessary for life have been here from the beginning, since the planet's initial formation.

According to the researchers, the study also appears to be consistent with research tracking the origin of water on Earth. As scientists continue to investigate these and similar ideas, it may lead to a better understanding of the origin of life on Earth.
