Gençlerbirliği president resigns following crisis
Gençlerbirliği President Osman Sungur has resigned from his post. It was recently revealed that salaries at the club had not been paid.
Osman Sungur, the president of Gençlerbirliği, one of the teams in the Super Lig, has announced his resignation.
In a statement regarding the matter, Osman Sungur said the following:
"Dear Gençlerbirliği Community,
Since the day I became president of the century-old Gençlerbirliği Sports Club, my greatest goal has been to carry this distinguished club to where it deserves to be, back to the Super Lig.
Carrying the honor of bringing this pride to our community by returning to the Super Lig after years will remain one of the most meaningful achievements of my life. During this process, I made every kind of material and moral sacrifice for our club; I had only one goal: for Gençlerbirliği to stand tall again and for our fans to smile.
However, today, due to health problems I have been experiencing for some time and personal matters, I have decided to step down from my position as club president.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our board members, our technical team, our athletes, and above all, the great Gençlerbirliği fans who stood by me and did not withhold their support during my tenure.
Throughout my time in office, I have not had any problems with any of our board members; on the contrary, they have been my greatest supporters during this process.
Throughout my tenure, at every step, I and my board members have strived to be worthy of this club's deep-rooted history and values.
Although I am leaving a piece of my heart here as I depart today, I believe with all my heart that my colleagues will bring our distinguished club to the highest level it deserves with their material and moral support in this new process, that Gençlerbirliği will achieve much greater successes in the future, and that when the time comes, they will appear before our club's esteemed delegates with their heads held high.
Sincerely,
SALARIES WERE NOT PAID
It had emerged that championship bonuses had not yet been paid and that players at Gençlerbirliği, which was promoted from the TFF 1st League last season, had not received their salaries for 2 months.
