Real Madrid has issued an official statement apologizing to the Chinese people due to remarks made by Kylian Mbappé that sparked backlash in China. The club expressed its regret for “any discomfort that may have been caused” by the French star's comments.
The Spanish club's statement follows an earlier apology from Mbappé himself and an apology issued by La Liga President Javier Tebas on behalf of the league to the Chinese people. It is noted that the controversy has not remained limited to social media reactions but has also extended to broadcasting and sponsorship issues.

In its statement, Real Madrid emphasized its deep respect for China, its history, culture, and citizens. The club also sent a message of respect to the millions of fans in China who hold love and admiration for Real Madrid.
The club stated that Mbappé had expressed his regret in his own statement and reaffirmed his respect for the Chinese people, adding that it remains committed to the values of “respect, coexistence, and intercultural understanding.”
HOW DID THE CRISIS GROW?
The controversy began after the circulation of a video in which Mbappé spoke about mocking montage images prepared with his own facial features. The French footballer's comment that he found the montage, in which his face was placed on the body of a person he described as a “Chinese dictator,” the funniest, drew widespread reaction in China.
Mbappé later acknowledged in a statement that his comment was inappropriate. The star footballer stated that he was aware his words had hurt the feelings of many people in China and within Chinese communities around the world, saying, “I apologize to everyone I offended with my words; that was never my intention.”
According to media reports, China's official television broadcaster, CCTV, has halted the broadcast of La Liga matches and some content featuring Mbappé. It was also reported that Chinese companies Dongpeng, Mengniu, and Milkground have announced the termination of their commercial partnerships with the footballer.
La Liga President Javier Tebas also stated that they are working with partners to overcome the crisis, drawing attention to the importance of protecting the relationships that Spanish football has built with China over the years.
