Argentina declares Iranian chargé d'affaires 'persona non grata'
The Argentine government has declared Iran's Chargé d'Affaires in Argentina, Mohsen Soltani Tehrani, 'persona non grata' and ordered him to leave the country within 48 hours.
The diplomatic crisis between Argentina and Iran is deepening. Following the announcement by Argentine President Javier Milei's government that it has added the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its list of terrorist organizations, the Tehran administration reacted sharply to the decision. In a statement issued yesterday by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the move was described as an "illegal and illegitimate act" by the Argentine administration, while emphasizing that defining the IRGC as a terrorist organization was an "unforgivable insult" to the Iranian people.
Iran's Chargé d'Affaires in Argentina declared 'persona non grata'
The Buenos Aires administration took a diplomatic counter-step today. The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared Iran's Chargé d'Affaires in Argentina, Mohsen Soltani Tehrani, "persona non grata." Tehrani was ordered to leave the country within 48 hours. The ministry's statement also noted that the Tehran administration's remarks contained "false, insulting, and baseless accusations against Argentina and its highest-level officials."
Argentina's decision to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization
In a previous statement by the Argentine Presidency, it was reported that the decision was taken on the grounds that the IRGC supports Hezbollah, which is held responsible for the country's deadliest bombing attack in 1994 at the AMIA Jewish community center in the capital, Buenos Aires, which resulted in the loss of 85 lives. The statement noted that the decision allows for the implementation of financial sanctions and other operational restrictions.
