Asif Ali Zardari becomes Pakistan's new President

68-year-old Asif Ali Zardari defeated his closest rival, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who received 181 votes, with 411 votes.

Zardari, the husband of Benazir Bhutto—who served as Prime Minister twice and was assassinated during an election rally in 2007 after returning to her country to participate in elections—has become the only politician in the country to be elected to the constitutional office for a second time.

Asif Ali Zardari (born July 26, 1955) is a Pakistani politician. He served as the 11th President of Pakistan between 2008 and 2013. As of 2017, he is the co-chairman of the Pakistan People's Party.

A Sindhi landowner, Zardari gained political prominence after marrying Benazir Bhutto, who would later rise to the premiership, on December 18, 1987.

As of March 9, 2024, Asif Ali Zardari has become the new President of Pakistan.
