Avalanche in Italy's South Tyrol region: 5 dead

Another avalanche disaster has occurred in South Tyrol, a winter tourism hub located in northeastern Italy near the Austrian border. Five German mountaineers lost their lives in the avalanche that struck the Ortler region of South Tyrol. According to information provided by the mountain rescue team, the avalanche occurred as two separate groups of mountaineers were approaching the 3,500-meter Vertainspitze Peak.

Following the search and rescue operations launched immediately after the incident was reported, 3 people were initially found dead. It was announced that the 2 people identified as missing also lost their lives in the evening hours. Italian police reported that an investigation into the incident has been launched.

Avalanches occur frequently in the South Tyrol region, which is a popular climbing destination in Europe, particularly for Germans. In two separate avalanche disasters that occurred on April 11, 2024, and December 29, 2019, 7 Germans had lost their lives.

Professional mountaineers choose South Tyrol in every season to reach the region's 3,905-meter peak.
