Christmas market locked down due to public safety concerns

The Lincoln Christmas Market, one of the oldest Christmas markets in England, has been cancelled this year due to public safety concerns following its massive success last year. The market, which was visited by 320 thousand people in 2022, had celebrated its 40th anniversary and stood out as one of the country's longest-running holiday markets.

However, it was cancelled by authorities this year due to concerns that having too many people in a small area in the city center could be uncomfortable for visitors. The four-day event traditionally hosted entertainers, choirs, and brightly lit activities.

The council decided to organize various festive activities, such as an ice rink, in the city center instead of this year's event. However, the decision sparked anger among city residents and traders.

The city's Conservative MP, Karl McCartney, drew attention to the dispute by accusing the Labour-run council of "cultural and economic vandalism." In a statement on Facebook, he stated that the closure of the Christmas Market had negative impacts on the public, the community, and businesses, and damaged the city's reputation.

The city council's rejection of a motion to bring the market back next year last week further increased the anger of circles toward the city council. Christan Meggitt, who runs Roly's Fudge Pantry, stated that she bought the shop with the income from last year's Christmas market, but this year's cancellation revealed the difficulty of supporting her family.

City council leader Councillor Ric Metcalfe had explained the reason for the cancellation by stating that the massive success of 2022 led to too many people feeling uncomfortable in a small area.
