Cleaning worker finds 100 thousand dollars in restroom

An incident that occurred in 2011 at the Melbourne headquarters of a television channel in Australia turned into a money mystery that remained unsolved for years. Chamindu Amarsinghe, a worker cleaning the restrooms at the Channel Nine building, found a large amount of Australian dollars in one of the sanitary disposal bins.

Instead of keeping the money for himself, Amarsinghe reported the situation to his supervisor. Police were then called to the scene. The investigation determined that part of the money was in the disposal bin, while some banknotes were retrieved from inside the plumbing.

The cleaning worker, who initially thought it might be a prank, witnessed the investigation into the source of the money once the police arrived. A plumber was also called to the building after it was understood that money was also coming out of the plumbing.

However, despite all investigations, the owner of the cash, which exceeded 100 thousand Australian dollars, could not be reached. As reported by The Guardian, at one stage, a person from Sydney was charged in connection with possible proceeds of crime; however, this charge was dropped shortly after.

The investigation could not determine who left the money in the restroom. As no one claimed the cash, the matter was taken to court.

Approximately three years after the money was found, the Melbourne Magistrates' Court had to decide the fate of the cash. During this process, it was stated that Amarsinghe was living in New Zealand for information technology training and did not expect to get the money back.
