Crisis erupts in second week of premiership

Labour Party leader Andy Burnham went abroad for a short family vacation in his second week after being appointed Prime Minister of the UK on July 20. A statement from the Prime Minister's office indicated that Burnham would continue to manage government affairs remotely while out of the country, and that daily administrative operations would be handled by Secretary of State Louise Haigh. Anderson expressed his reaction by saying, "It has only been two weeks since he took office and Andy Burnham is already fed up. After shelving a series of unfunded promises and ignoring more than 2,000 migrants entering the country without authorization, he has disappeared for a pleasant vacation abroad. This is incompatible with this style of leadership."

Although it is traditional for prime ministers to go on vacation while the UK Parliament is closed in August, some leaders in past years have had to interrupt or cancel their vacations due to national crises. For example, Keir Starmer suspended his vacation in 2024 due to summer riots, and in 2025 due to a summit with Donald Trump regarding Ukraine.
