Critical ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah

Washington-led negotiations, mediated by the US, have resulted in a significant step toward easing the years-long tension between Israel and Lebanon. The ceasefire agreement was announced in the days following recent moves by Iran that had further escalated tensions in the Middle East.

According to the agreement, the Iran-backed Hezbollah forces will completely withdraw from the area south of the Litani River in southern Lebanon. Thus, the Lebanese armed forces will be the only ones to replace the armed elements in this area, and the influence of non-state actors will be neutralized.

In this strategic region south of the Litani River, the Lebanese army will now be the sole official authority. The parties also agreed on the establishment of pilot zones that allow Lebanon to assume an independent and controlling role in the designated areas.

Just before the ceasefire decision, Iran had announced that it was ending its talks with the US due to Israel's military operations against Lebanon and that it was closing the Strait of Hormuz again. Statements regarding the ceasefire emphasized that this development marks the overcoming of a significant obstacle in preventing a potential war with Iran.

Assessments suggest that Israel and Lebanon, which do not have official diplomatic relations in the region, are taking a step into a process where they can restore mutual trust. All eyes are now on whether the terms of the agreement will be implemented and whether there will be new developments on the path to lasting peace in the region.
