Driver who drove into Liverpool championship celebrations sentenced to 21 years and 6 months in prison

The trial of Paul Doyle, who injured 134 people by driving his vehicle into a crowd on Water Street in the city of Liverpool during the Liverpool football team's championship celebrations in England in May, began at the Crown Court in Liverpool. On the first day of the trial,Doyle, who deniedthe 31 chargesagainst him,thenon the second day of the trial,admitted to the charges.He pleaded guilty. The court found him guilty of dangerous driving, affray, and 17 counts ofattempted grievous bodily harm,9 counts ofcausing intentional grievous bodily harm, and 3 counts of intentional wounding.The 54-year-old Doyle, who was tried for these crimes,was sentenced to 21 years and 6 monthsin prison.The court delivered its verdict.

Prosecutor Paul Greaney stated that 134 people, including 8children, were struck by the vehicledriven byDoyle, who had beenin the area where thecelebrations were taking place, behindstating that he planned to pick up his friends by car, "Doyle, is an angry person whose rage completely tookcontrol. He not only caused widespread damage,but also brought terror to everyone who wasexpecting to have a joyful day,causingpanic."he said.

Greaney stated, "When thedashcam footageis examined, it strongly suggests that the defendant saw himself as the most important element on Water Streetandthat he was determined to reachhis destinationwaited for everyone to move out of his waying conclusion we can draw. The reality here is very simple; during his journey, Doylegave in to his angerandand stated that he "intended to harm people while driving into the crowd with rage."Greaney also

emphasized that Daniel Barr, described by prosecutors as a "hero," actedinstinctively when the vehicle driving into the crowd stopped briefly beside him,and that he attempted to stop Doyle.Prosecutor Greaney stated, "Barr opened the passenger door of the vehicle and tried to pull the handbrake,but was unable to stop the vehicle."and crashed into the crowd.He did thisin an attempt to stop thedriver.He carried this outas the vehiclebegan to move again,Barr pulled the handbrake. tried to stop the driver by pullingat him," he said.

Liverpool Crown Court Judge Andrew Menary stated, "It is impossible to understand how a sane person could behave as Doyle did. Driving a vehicle into a crowdwith such stubborn disregardforhuman life is an incomprehensible situation," he said.
