German Chancellor Merz condemns Ben-Gvir's Gaza remarks
Berlin has deemed Ben-Gvir's calls for attacks on Gaza to be in violation of international law and issued a warning regarding the annexation of the West Bank.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reacted sharply to statements made by Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir regarding Gaza. Speaking in Berlin, Deputy Government Spokesperson Sebastian Hille stated that Merz described Ben-Gvir's calls as "inhumane" and "contrary to international law."
During a press conference, Hille evaluated Ben-Gvir's remarks that "30 to 40 attacks should be carried out on Gaza every night." Hille said, "Chancellor Merz strongly condemns Ben-Gvir's inhumane calls that violate international law. These are unacceptable."
The German government also recalled that a decision was made at the recent European Council meeting to prepare targeted measures against radical politicians who call for actions that violate human dignity and international law. Hille noted that the issue would be discussed at the Gymnich meeting of foreign ministers.
Developments in the West Bank were also on Berlin's agenda. Hille stated that the latest steps taken by the Israeli government in the region are being followed by Merz with "great concern" and that this concern has been expressed repeatedly in the past.
According to Hille, Merz's message is that new formal or de facto annexation steps in the West Bank must be avoided. The German Chancellor emphasizes that practices that could lead to annexation through political, administrative, or other measures are an obstacle to a two-state solution.
Hille further conveyed that Merz demands that Israel treat Palestinians humanely, protect their property, and ensure the provision of public services and humanitarian aid.
