Government falls in Poland. Prime Minister Morawiecki loses vote of confidence

The government lost the vote of confidence held in the Sejm, the lower house of parliament.

While 190 votes were cast in favor of the government led by Morawiecki, 266 votes were cast against it.

The Sejm will now determine a new candidate for prime minister.

It is considered certain that the new candidate will be Donald Tusk, who is supported by the Civic Coalition, the Third Way, and the Left Party.

HE NEEDED TO RECEIVE THE SUPPORT OF THE MAJORITY

The Sejm is expected to nominate Tusk as the prime ministerial candidate later today. Tusk, who served as prime minister in Civic Platform governments between 2007 and 2014, will present his government's program to the Sejm on December 12, which will be followed by a vote of confidence.

Tusk and his cabinet are expected to be sworn in by Polish President Andrzej Duda on December 13.

Following the elections held on October 15, Polish President Andrzej Duda had tasked the current Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, a representative of the Law and Justice Party which came in first in the elections but could not secure a parliamentary majority, with forming a government.

To win the vote of confidence, Morawiecki needed to receive the support of an absolute majority in the Sejm, the lower house of parliament.
