New charges being prepared against Maduro in the US

The US administration is reportedly preparing to bring new charges against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. According to a US official, the charges will be linked to allegations of torture against Americans held in Venezuela.

While it is stated that the new charges could be brought forward on October 8, no official statement has yet been made regarding the details of the file. The identities of the individuals alleged to be victims in the claims have also not been shared with the public.

The US Attorney's Office in Manhattan did not comment on the matter. There has also been no statement from Maduro and Flores' lawyers regarding the new allegations.

Maduro and Flores were captured by the US military from their home in Caracas on January 3 and taken to New York. The pair are facing drug trafficking charges and deny the allegations. The trial is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027.

The 13-year period during which Maduro governed Venezuela was marked by severe tensions between Washington and Caracas. During this process, the US administration had argued that some American citizens were being unjustly held in detention in Venezuela.

Following the capture of Maduro, the administration in Venezuela passed to former Vice President Delcy Rodriguez. It is reported that the Caracas administration has increased its cooperation with the Trump administration during the Rodriguez era.
