Number of injured rises to 37 in 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan

The number of people injured in the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Japan's Ibaraki Prefecture has risen to 37. The tremor was felt strongly across large parts of the Kanto region, which includes the capital, Tokyo.

The Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) reported that 15 of the injury cases were recorded in Tokyo. According to the statement, 9 people were injured in Saitama, 8 in Kanagawa, 4 in Chiba, and 1 in Ibaraki, the epicenter of the earthquake.

Authorities announced that there were no fatalities in the earthquake. It was stated that the tremor caused minor material damage in some areas and that there were partial delays in train services due to safety inspections.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that earthquakes of similar magnitude could occur in the region within the next week.

The earthquake was recorded in the south of Ibaraki Prefecture at around 02:00 local time. The JMA had announced that the tremor occurred at a depth of 70 kilometers and that there was no tsunami risk following the earthquake.

Japan was also shaken by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake on July 28, with its epicenter in Kumamoto Prefecture. In that earthquake, 38 people lost their lives and 38,296 structures were damaged.
