Ahead of the European Parliament (EP) elections on June 6-9, where the future of European politics will be shaped, an interesting legislative proposal has come from the League party, a partner in Italy's right-wing government.
Claudio Borghi, a senator for the League from the Tuscany region, stated in a post on his X account, "A legislative proposal to repeal the law mandating the display of the European Union flag inside and outside public buildings has been submitted to the relevant offices. There is only one Italian flag. Regional flags should be displayed alongside it."
Senator Borghi, who is also a candidate in the upcoming EP elections next month, faced backlash from many users on social media.
'THEY SHOULD ALSO GIVE UP THE FUND'
Florence Mayor Dario Nardella responded to Borghi on the X platform, stating, "Borghi wants to remove the European flag from public buildings. This does not surprise me. They are the same people who want to leave the Euro. If they are so disgusted by Europe, they should also give up the 200 billion euros (the post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery fund) coming from Europe for businesses and families. Let's see what the Italians think about that."
Borghi replied to Nardella by arguing that the money from this fund is debt.
POINTED OUT THE ABSENCE OF THE EU FLAG
Following other reactions he received, Borghi shared photos of the German Bundestag, the Portuguese Parliament, and the Austrian Parliament, pointing out that there is no EU flag in these locations.
Borghi stated that there is no mandate for the EU flag in public institutions in Germany, but that such a mandate has existed in Italy since 1998.
