'Artificial sun' in South Korea operated at 100 million degrees Celsius for 48 seconds

Scientists at the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy (KFE) are aiming to operate the KSTAR nuclear reactor at 100 million degrees Celsius for as long as possible to develop nuclear fusion technology, a clean energy source that does not cause carbon pollution.

The studies mimic the reactions that cause the Sun and other stars to shine, creating extraordinarily high temperatures.

30-SECOND WORLD RECORD SURPASSED

Scientists succeeded in maintaining plasma at a temperature of 100 million degrees, which is 7 times hotter than the core of the Sun, for 48 seconds. Thus, the previous world record of 30 seconds, set in 2021, was surpassed.

KSTAR Research Center Director Si-Woo Yoon pointed out the significance of this latest record, noting that maintaining such high temperatures is not easy.

The director noted that they have a goal to operate the reactor for 300 seconds by 2026.
