Statement from Swedish Foreign Minister Billström on Turkey
Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström stated, regarding the approval of his country's NATO accession bill by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) General Assembly, "Our fight against terrorism will continue in close cooperation with Turkey from now on."
In a press conference held in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs residence, Billström said, "I thank the TBMM. From now on, we will work in close cooperation with Turkey within NATO. It was a long journey."
Stating that the approval of AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan is awaited in the process, Billström answered the question, "What will your NATO membership add to your relations with Turkey?" as follows:
"Naturally, the approval of the TBMM has made the agreements we made previously valuable.
We had reached a consensus in the Trilateral Memorandum (Turkey, Finland, and Sweden) we signed at the 2022 NATO Madrid Summit and the subsequent agreement made in Vilnius.
These agreements continue. From now on, our fight against terrorism will continue in close cooperation with Turkey."
