The move that reveals the UK's perspective on a 'ceasefire in Gaza'
Paul Bristow, Parliamentary Private Secretary to UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Michelle Donelan, has been dismissed from his post for calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
A spokesperson for 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister's Office, announced in a statement on the matter that Bristow, who is also a Member of Parliament for the ruling Conservative Party, had been dismissed by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for making "comments that were not consistent with the principles of collective responsibility."
After being dismissed by Prime Minister Sunak, Bristow made the following statement to the BBC:
"I fully understand the Prime Minister's decision and I am sorry to leave a job I enjoyed, but I can now speak openly about an issue that many of my constituents care deeply about. I believe I can do this better from the backbenches than by taking a salary from the government."
In a letter he wrote to Prime Minister Sunak last week, Bristow had stated that a permanent ceasefire would save lives and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those who need it most.
In a statement he made in 2020, MP Paul Bristow had stated that he wanted to learn what Ramadan meant for Muslims and announced that he would fast for a week to share the same experience with Muslims during Ramadan.
The British government supports pauses in fighting for humanitarian aid to Gaza but rejects calls for a ceasefire.
LATEST SITUATION IN THE ATTACKS
The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, launched a comprehensive attack on Israel on the morning of October 7.
The Israeli army also began intensive airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.
Israeli authorities announced that more than 1,400 Israelis, including 312 soldiers, were killed and 5,132 people were injured in the attacks from Gaza.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza reported that 8,306 Palestinians, including 3,457 children and 2,136 women, were killed and 21,048 people were injured in Israeli attacks.
In the occupied West Bank, 122 Palestinians were killed and approximately 2,000 Palestinians were injured in attacks by Israeli forces and Jewish settlers.
In Israeli bombardments, 35 journalists in Gaza and 1 journalist in Lebanon lost their lives.
Due to Israel's intensive attacks on the blockaded Gaza Strip, landline, mobile phone, and internet communication services in the region have come to a standstill.
The Israeli army began expanding limited ground operations on October 26 and further increased the intensity of its airstrikes.
Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest health facility in Gaza where thousands of wounded and civilians are located, was also targeted by the Israeli army.
In the clashes between the Israeli army and Hezbollah since October 8, 48 Hezbollah members and 4 Israeli soldiers have been killed so far.
