US military: Iranian military facilities struck
The US military announced that warships passing from the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman on May 7 were subjected to unprovoked attacks by Iran, and that in response to these attacks, in self-defense, some Iranian military facilities were struck.
While explosions occurring around the city of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran and Qeshm Island have raised concerns that the war could restart, an official statement on the matter has come from the US military.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the US warships USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), and USS Mason (DDG 87) were targeted by Iranian attacks during their passage through international waters on May 7.
"No US assets were hit"
Stating that Iran attacked with numerous missiles as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and small boats, but that no US assets were hit, the statement said, "CENTCOM has neutralized the incoming threats; it has targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for the attacks on US forces, including missile and UAV launch sites, command and control centers, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance points."
While emphasizing that the US military is not seeking to escalate tensions, the statement added, "CENTCOM is postured and ready to protect American forces."
