Wreckage of plane that crashed 17 years ago found

In the US state of Michigan, the wreckage of a "Socata TB-20" aircraft that crashed into Lake Huron on the Canadian border 17 years ago has been found.

Michigan State Police announced that a private search and rescue company located the wreckage of the plane, which was carrying two people including the pilot, near Bois Blanc Island in the state.

While skeletal remains were found near the wreckage, examinations conducted at the Northern Michigan University Forensic Anthropology Center confirmed that the remains belonged to the 56-year-old passenger, H. Brooke Stauffer Jr.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Socata TB-20 aircraft, piloted by Stauffer Jr.'s 52-year-old fiancée Karen Dodds, crashed into Lake Huron on the US-Canada border in 2007.

While Dodds' body was recovered two months after the accident, no trace of Stauffer Jr. or the plane's wreckage had been found.

At the request of Stauffer Jr.'s family, a private company began search operations in October 2023.
