Bad news for Trump from Harvard

Harvard University, one of the United States' long-standing educational institutions, has taken legal action against the federal government's attempt to freeze funds provided to the university. The university administration has taken the matter to court, arguing that this decision by the Trump administration is "unlawful and an overreach of authority."

SHARP REACTION FROM PRESIDENT GARBER

Harvard University President Alan Garber harshly criticized the Trump administration's stance in a statement on the university's official website. Garber stated that the government has frozen 2.2 billion dollars in funding and is also planning to freeze another 1 billion dollars in funds.

Garber emphasized that the university refuses to bow to the federal government's "illegal demands" and that the government has taken various punitive steps as a result.

EDUCATION AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AT RISK

President Garber stated that not only is the freezing of funds on the agenda, but the revocation of Harvard's tax-exempt status is also being considered. Noting that these developments could have devastating effects on education, scientific research, and healthcare services, Garber said:

"Such punitive measures threaten not only Harvard but the entire American higher education system. We must take this step to defend academic freedom, scientific independence, and freedom of expression."

In his statement, Garber implied that the Trump administration intends to interfere with the university's internal operations. Arguing that the government is trying to exert pressure on "who is hired and what is taught" at Harvard, Garber stated, "Today, we are defending the values that make American higher education a beacon for the world."

STRIKING DETAILS FROM THE LAWSUIT PETITION

The following statements were included in the lawsuit petition submitted to the court by Harvard:

"The government is attempting to steer Harvard University by threatening to cut federal funds in order to force it to conform to its preferred ideological molds. This clearly contradicts freedom of expression and academic autonomy."

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Trump administration had threatened to freeze federal funds for many universities, including Harvard, citing reasons such as pro-Palestine campus protests and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

The administration had announced that it had launched an investigation into more than 8.7 billion dollars in grants provided to Harvard University by various organizations "to ensure they are being used in accordance with civil rights laws."

In response to this threat from the federal government, Harvard University announced that it would not accept Trump's demands for "reform at the university." Harvard University professors had filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration's decision to investigate the 8.7 billion dollars in federal funds provided to the school.

The Trump administration then decided to freeze 2.2 billion dollars in funds and a 60 million dollar contract value provided to Harvard.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the freezing of funds provided to Harvard by citing the enforcement of "laws regarding antisemitism."

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had announced that it was considering revoking Harvard University's tax-exempt status.
