Breaking News: Justice Minister Akın Gürlek makes statement on live broadcasting of IMM trial!

Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek made statements to journalists before the AKP's parliamentary group meeting.

"THERE IS CURRENTLY NO POSSIBILITY FOR LIVE BROADCASTING"

Speaking about the IMM trial, Gürlek was asked about MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli's call for the hearings to be broadcast. Gürlek stated, "A change in the law is required for a live broadcast. Currently, our legislation does not allow for live broadcasting. However, if the law is changed, it can be broadcast live."

"COURTROOMS ARE NOT POLITICAL ARENAS"

Regarding the argument that took place between the defendant IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and the presiding judge during the first two days of the hearing, Gürlek said, "Courtrooms are not political arenas. Political shows cannot be staged here. Only trials are conducted in courtrooms."

"EVERYONE HAS THE STATUS OF A DEFENDANT"

Gürlek also commented on the presiding judge addressing Ekrem İmamoğlu as 'Defendant Ekrem': 

"The status and duties of individuals are not important. Everyone has the status of a defendant. This is why the term defendant is used legally. When judges and prosecutors address people in courtrooms, they say, 'Defendant Mehmet, Defendant Ali, Defendant Ekrem.' They do not address them as mayor, honorable director, or similar titles."

Gürlek's statements are as follows:

According to Article 138 of our Constitution, courts conduct trials on behalf of the Turkish nation. During the trial process, no one can give suggestions, instructions, or orders to the courts. There is absolutely no room for making greeting speeches here. There is a procedure, and according to this procedure, the time for each defendant to make their defense is determined by the court panel.

We must not undermine courtrooms. Political shows are not permitted there. No court is influenced by rhetoric. It makes its decision based on the evidence in the file."
