Breaking News: Operation at CHP-run municipality in İzmir! Mayor in custody

A simultaneous operation was carried out this morning as part of an investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into allegations of "bribery" and "extortion" at the Menderes Municipality.

Within the scope of the investigation, detention warrants were issued for 16 people, including Menderes Mayor İlkay Çiçek. The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that 13 people have been taken into custody so far during the operations.

Meanwhile, searches were conducted at Mayor Çiçek's home and the Menderes Municipality service building as part of the investigation.

FIRST STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office included the following statements in its announcement regarding the operation:

"Within the scope of the investigation conducted under the coordination of the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office; an investigation is being carried out into suspects identified as having committed the crimes of 'Establishing an Organization for the Purpose of Committing Crimes (Turkish Penal Code Art. 220), Being a Member of an Organization Established for the Purpose of Committing Crimes (Turkish Penal Code Art. 220/2), Bribery (Turkish Penal Code Art. 252), Extortion (Turkish Penal Code Art. 250), Forgery of Official Documents (Turkish Penal Code Art. 204), Misconduct in Office (Turkish Penal Code Art. 257), and Causing Zoning Pollution (Turkish Penal Code Art. 184).'

In the work carried out within the scope of the investigation, a total of 16 suspects were identified, including Menderes Mayor İ. Ç.

As a result of the simultaneous operation carried out against the suspects, 13 suspects have been taken into custody. Efforts to apprehend the remaining 3 suspects are ongoing. The investigation is being conducted in a multi-faceted and meticulous manner under the coordination of the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office."
