Davutoğlu targets Özgür Özel! 'You are supposedly aspiring to power in Turkey, is that so?'

Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel responded to criticisms from AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding his Brussels rally during yesterday's parliamentary group meeting. Touching upon the 2015 downing of a Russian warplane in his speech, Özel stated, "Erdoğan was very uncomfortable with the image that emerged. He says, 'I have never bent or buckled anywhere in my political life.' Let us recall a few instances of Mr. Erdoğan's 'principled' stance. When the Russian plane was downed, the president and the prime minister entered a race. Erdoğan was very angry and said, 'I shot it down'."

DAVUTOĞLU ATTACKS ÖZEL FROM THE PODIUM

Future Party leader Ahmet Davutoğlu reacted sharply to these remarks by Özgür Özel.

Speaking at his party's group meeting, Davutoğlu addressed the CHP leader, saying, "I was very saddened while listening to Mr. Özgür Özel's speech. You are supposedly aspiring to power in Turkey, is that so? Mr. Özel, do you know how a Chief of General Staff is managed?"

Explaining the events that took place during the process of the Russian plane being downed, Davutoğlu added, "That day, before I had even made any statement, it was the President who announced, 'We shot down the Russian plane.' I said what Mr. Özgür Özel mentioned; I said, 'I gave the order.' In those days, some blamed the pilot there; I said, 'I gave the order.' Not to compete, but to give confidence to our Armed Forces, to say that I am behind you."
