Following the recent arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and the subsequent appointment of a trustee to the Esenyurt Municipality, a trustee move has come for 3 more municipalities. The Ministry of Interior announced that trustees have been appointed to the Mardin, Batman, and Halfeti municipalities.

DEM Party Batman Mayor Gülistan Sönük stated that they do not recognize the decision and went to the front of the municipal building with her accompanying delegation. Mehmet Rüştü Tiryaki, DEM Party Deputy Co-Chair responsible for Local Governments, who was among the delegation that went to the municipality, reported the latest situation to 12punto.

Stating that “The AKP is trying to bend the hand it could not bend through elections with a trustee,” Tiryaki noted that the municipal building is surrounded by thousands of police officers.

‘THOUSANDS OF POLICE SURROUNDED THE MUNICIPAL BUILDING’

Tiryaki said the following:

“The AKP continues the lawlessness it knows. First in 2016, then in 2019, later in Esenyurt in 2024, and now they have started a trustee attempt once again in Mardin, Batman, and Halfeti. It is trying to seize the municipalities it could not win through trustees. This place is currently (in front of Batman Municipality) under occupation. Thousands of police have surrounded the building, and roads have been closed. The name of this is clearly a coup.”

‘THE TIMING IS SIGNIFICANT’

Tiryaki also drew attention to the date. Reminding that Selahattin Demirtaş was detained on November 4, 2016, and has been held in custody since that date, Tiryaki said:

“We also think the timing is significant. November 4, 2016, is one of the darkest dates in the history of this country. On that day, our politicians like Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ were detained. They have been in custody since that date. It is significant that it is exactly on the anniversary. We are here. We will resist. We will protect democracy and the will of the people.”
