Izmir wildfire investigation: Two children released under judicial control

The forest fire that began around 3:00 PM on August 16 in the Pirinççi Neighborhood Güzdere area of Izmir's Ödemiş district was brought under control after a major effort.

The flames were extinguished after 14 hours of work with the intervention of 3 aircraft, 1 helicopter, 2 fire trucks, and 1 water tanker belonging to the Izmir Regional Directorate of Forestry, as well as the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality fire department teams.

THEIR STATEMENTS HAVE EMERGED

As part of the investigation launched into the fire, the gendarmerie identified the suspects as 14-year-olds E.G. and N.K. The children, who were taken into custody yesterday evening, stated in their testimonies that a lighter they found in the forest overheated and exploded, causing the fire.

Following their statements, E.G. and N.K. were referred to the courthouse and released under judicial control. The investigation into the details of the lighter that caused the fire is ongoing.
