New law passed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey sparks controversy: 'A Dispossession Law?'
Osman Ünsal, Chairman of the Strong Turkey Platform, stated in a post on the social media platform X that the new law passed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) grants broad powers to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.
Ünsal emphasized that the ministry can seize buildings or real estate it deems necessary and, in return, allocate another property in a different region.
The new regulation was accepted as a result of the vote held in the TBMM on December 5, 2024.
According to the voting data, while the ruling bloc, primarily the AKP and MHP, supported the law, the majority of the opposition did not participate in the vote.
Only 74 opposition deputies voted against it, while 196 opposition deputies did not participate in the vote. This situation led to criticism regarding the ineffectiveness of the opposition.
Strong Turkey Platform Chairman Osman Ünsal used the following expressions in his post:
“Since there is no opposition, the government does whatever it wants. As a nation, we are left alone again. Protect your property!”
Within the scope of the law, it was stated that in areas reserved for public use or allocated for public service, an equivalent real estate allocation could be made in another region instead of property rights. While this situation is criticized by many segments as “dispossession,” the lack of sufficient resistance from the opposition also drew backlash.
Experts point out that this regulation may have arisen from a necessity due to the insufficiency of reserve areas, especially after disasters, but that the implementation could create serious problems in terms of individual property rights.
