Statement from IMM: Nostalgic Trams on Istiklal Avenue Are Changing

The battery-powered, electric-energy-operated trams that will replace the nostalgic trams, which are among the symbols of Istiklal Avenue, will begin service following test drives.

In a statement made by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), it was noted that the IMM subsidiary IETT is carrying out work on battery-powered, electric-energy-operated trams to carry the T2 Taksim-Tünel Nostalgic Tram on Istiklal Avenue, which dates back to 1914, into the future.

The statement indicated that the designed vehicles will have the same design as the 4 nostalgic trams that currently travel using energy received from overhead electric cables.

It was noted that the battery-powered, electric-energy-operated trams will be able to travel 150 kilometers on a single charge, that the vehicles with a 60-passenger capacity will ensure passenger safety with a camera-mirror system, and that they will have a design that prevents passengers from traveling dangerously by holding onto the outside.

It was stated that test operations for the first produced battery-powered tram have begun on Istiklal Avenue and that it will begin its service once the work is completed.

The statement, which conveyed that all vehicles will be converted to battery power over time, provided the information that the overhead power line on the avenue will be canceled, thereby eliminating visual pollution.
