Strong storm begins: Snow is coming to Istanbul

The Turkish State Meteorological Service has issued a warning for strong winds and storms in the Marmara Region for Monday, February 2.

It was announced that the wind, expected to blow from the north, will reach speeds of 50-70 kilometers per hour in the vicinity of Istanbul, Yalova, Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, and Çanakkale, as well as the southern parts of Edirne and the northern parts of Bursa and Balıkesir, with gusts potentially reaching 80 kilometers per hour. It was stated that the storm could lead to disruptions in transportation, as well as negative incidents such as roofs being blown off and trees being uprooted.

STORM WARNING FROM THE ISTANBUL GOVERNOR'S OFFICE

The Istanbul Governor's Office also issued a statement in line with the warnings from the Turkish State Meteorological Service. Regarding the strong winds and storms affecting the Marmara Region, the Governor's Office called on citizens to be cautious against negative incidents, particularly roofs being blown off and trees being uprooted. The Governor's Office emphasized that precautions should also be taken regarding potential disruptions in transportation.

HEAVY SNOWFALL EXPECTED IN THRACE

The Meteorological Service also issued a heavy snowfall warning for the Thrace region. Precipitation, which is expected to begin as rain in the morning hours, is forecast to continue as sleet and snow, particularly in the southern parts of Edirne, the northern and western parts of Tekirdağ, and the northern parts of Kırklareli. Snow depth is estimated to reach up to 10-20 centimeters. It was stated that caution is required in these regions against disruptions in transportation, icing, frost, and the possibility of blizzards in higher elevations.

PRECAUTIONS MUST BE TAKEN AGAINST POTENTIAL NEGATIVE IMPACTS

Meteorological warnings indicate that disruptions in transportation are likely, and that icing and frost will be effective. It was stated that with the snowfall expected to continue throughout the day in Thrace, citizens should avoid traveling to higher elevations and that necessary measures should be taken to facilitate the work of snow removal teams. Furthermore, it was stated that vehicle drivers and pedestrians should be particularly careful in areas at risk of blizzards.
