Theft at transformer cabins causes 3 million TL in damage in Şanlıurfa

Thieves who broke into transformer cabins in five separate neighborhoods in Şanlıurfa within the last two weeks stole copper cables and batteries, leaving both thousands of subscribers and official institutions without electricity. The incidents resulted in approximately 3 million TL in material damage.

Dicle Elektrik has faced a serious security and service disruption issue due to the consecutive copper thefts in Şanlıurfa. Thieves who entered transformer cabins in five different neighborhoods caused not only thousands of subscribers but also important public institutions such as the Governor's Office, the Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, and the Courthouse to be left without electricity.

LED TO A WIDESPREAD OUTAGE

The latest incident occurred in the Paşabağı neighborhood of the Haliliye district. Thieves who broke into the transformer cabin, which provides energy to approximately 4,000 subscribers, in the morning hours broke the lock and stole the copper cables and batteries inside. This event led to a widespread energy outage, affecting critical public service buildings as well as residences and businesses in the region.

Previously, transformer cabins in the Seyrantepe neighborhood of the Karaköprü district and the Veysel Karani, Kamberiye, and Şair Nabi neighborhoods of the Haliliye district had been similarly tampered with, again victimizing thousands of subscribers. The cost of the damage caused to Dicle Elektrik's network infrastructure due to these thefts has been determined to be approximately 3 million TL.

 “UNAUTHORIZED INTERVENTION THREATENS LIFE AND PROPERTY SAFETY”

Making a statement regarding these incidents, Dicle Elektrik officials emphasized that only authorized personnel can intervene in the electrical grid, stating, “Individuals who intervene in energy infrastructure that carries a risk of death in an unauthorized manner are putting not only their own lives but also the life and property safety of all our citizens in the region at risk. These acts, committed for the sake of obtaining small amounts of income, cause millions of liras in public damage and the victimization of thousands of subscribers. We request our citizens to immediately report suspicious situations to law enforcement units and our institution.”

INVESTMENTS EXPECTED TO EXCEED 20 BILLION TL

Dicle Elektrik, which has invested a total of 17 billion TL in Şanlıurfa since 2013, will carry out an investment of 3 billion TL in the city specifically for 2025. The distribution company, which provided information that 90 different projects are being carried out in the province, primarily network renewals, capacity increases, and smart grid applications, stated that despite investments worth billions of liras, such sabotage against energy infrastructure disrupts service continuity.
