CHP deputies protest Central Bank Governor

Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) Governor Fatih Karahan went to the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Planning and Budget Committee to give a presentation, but the session became the scene of a protest by CHP deputies.

Before Fatih Karahan's presentation began, CHP deputies reacted sharply to the operation conducted on March 19, 2025, against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and his team, labeling it a "political intervention" and an "economic coup." The deputies arrived at the committee with signs reading, "The cost of the March 19 coup is 57 billion dollars."

AĞBABA'S EURO-TL REACTION 

The most notable moment of the protest was the speech by CHP Malatya Deputy Veli Ağbaba, who held up a 5-euro banknote and a 200-TL banknote to show CBRT Governor Karahan.

Ağbaba stated, "Look, Mr. Governor, the 5 euros in my hand are currently worth more than 200 TL. This is the point our currency has reached. Turkey's reputation is now measured by these pieces of paper."

Karahan gave a brief response to this criticism, saying, "We will discuss it."

COMMITTEE CHAIR INTERVENES 

As tensions rose, Planning and Budget Committee Chair Mehmet Muş called a 10-minute recess for the proceedings.
