Alarm bells in the fund crisis: Call for urgent measures

YENİ Party Istanbul MP Gökan Zeybek warned of risks to the real sector and employment, stating that the losses experienced in investment funds might not remain limited to financial markets.

Sharing a chart on his social media account, Zeybek drew attention to the sharp decline in the BIST 100 index, the drop in the portfolio value of investment funds, and company closures. Zeybek argued that problems in companies' access to financing, debt repayments, and cash flow are becoming evident.

SHARP DECLINE IN STOCK MARKET AND FUNDS

According to the data provided by Zeybek, the BIST 100 index was at 14,229.01 points on September 1, 2026, and fell to 11,947.18 points on September 30. The index's loss in September was calculated at 16.65 percent.

Stating that the index, which was at 12,249.04 points on October 1, fell to 10,759.56 points on October 30, Zeybek noted that the loss in October was 9.94 percent, and the total two-month decline reached 24.94 percent.

Zeybek stated that in September, the total portfolio value of investment funds decreased by 1 trillion 740 billion TL, and the portfolio value of money market funds decreased by 570 billion TL. The post also included information that the portfolio value of the industrial sector in the stock market declined by 23.24 percent, and the technology sector by 27.78 percent.

Bringing data regarding the real sector to the agenda, Zeybek noted that in September alone, 2,212 companies ceased operations, 449 of which were manufacturing businesses directly engaged in production. He reported that the number of employed people decreased by 49 thousand during the same period, while the number of unemployed people increased by 198 thousand.

Pointing to developments in private sector bonds, Zeybek claimed that net sales by foreign investors in this area exceeded 1.3 billion dollars after September 15. According to Zeybek, the contraction in access to financing could make it difficult for companies to roll over their debts, creating pressure on the supply chain, production, and employment.

At the end of his statement, Zeybek called on the government, emphasizing that measures must be taken before the problems in financial markets spread to the real sector.
