Number of tradespeople in Turkey drops by 115 thousand in six months

The September 2023 issue of the TEPAV (Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey) Employment Monitoring Bulletin has been published. According to the report, the total number of insured employees in September decreased by 2 percent (473 thousand) year-on-year, while it increased by 0.8 percent (195 thousand) month-on-month, reaching 23 million 218 thousand.

The annual employment change in the group of insured wage earners, which makes up 71 percent of total insured employees, showed a decrease of 4.6 percent (796 thousand 34), while it increased by 1.2 percent (199 thousand 727) on a monthly basis.

On the other hand, while a 3.4 percent decrease was observed in the annual change for the tradespeople-farmer group, changes in sub-categories varied. During this period, there was a 4 percent (104 thousand 932) decrease in the number of tradespeople and a 0.1 percent (381) increase in the number of farmers. Monthly changes in this group showed a 0.2 percent decrease in the number of tradespeople and a 0.7 percent increase in the number of farmers. The contraction in the number of tradespeople over the last six months rose to 115 thousand 289, falling to the lowest level seen since November 2021. The number of insured employees in the public sector increased by 13.2 percent year-on-year, while it decreased by 0.1 percent (3 thousand 254) month-on-month.

While employment in the manufacturing and wholesale-retail trade sectors contracted as of April, construction employment maintained its strong trend. Looking at the annual changes as of September, a contraction of 8.0 percent was recorded in manufacturing and 4.6 percent in the wholesale and retail trade sector.
