Turkey ranks 18th with 18.6 percent in central bank assets to GDP ratio
According to BIS data, Hong Kong leads the ranking in the ratio of central bank assets to GDP, while Turkey ranks 18th with 18.6 percent.
The ratio of central bank balance sheet sizes to national economies shows significant differences between economies. According to data from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), in a ranking prepared with the most recent observations from the first or second quarter of 2026, Hong Kong took the top spot with 130.1 percent.
Central bank assets include gold and foreign exchange reserves, as well as receivables from governments and the financial sector, other non-financial assets, and fixed assets. Calculating the ratio of these assets to gross domestic product (GDP) allows for a comparison of the weight of central bank balance sheets within an economy.
Hong Kong stood out as the only economy where central bank assets exceed the size of annual economic output. Hong Kong was followed by Switzerland with 102.5 percent, Singapore with 95.1 percent, and Japan with 94.4 percent. Thus, the ratio in the top four economies exceeded 90 percent.
TURKEY RANKS 18TH
Turkey ranked 18th with 18.6 percent in the ratio of central bank assets to GDP. While Indonesia was just ahead of Turkey with 19.1 percent, South Korea ranked ahead of Turkey with 21.3 percent and the US with 21.2 percent.
In the list, Mexico with 14.7 percent and Australia with 12.9 percent were below Turkey. The ratio was calculated at 34.4 percent in China, 39 percent in the Eurozone, 26.1 percent in India, and 25.8 percent in the United Kingdom.
