Additional tax coming for airline tickets

Singapore is introducing a new tax in 2026 to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector. With this implementation, passengers on flights departing from Singapore will pay an additional fee of up to 41.60 Singapore Dollars (approximately 32 US Dollars) on top of their ticket prices.

The tax amount will vary depending on the flight distance and the class in which the passenger is traveling. Economy class passengers will pay an additional 1 Singapore Dollar for flights within Southeast Asia, and 10.40 Singapore Dollars for flights to the Americas. For business and first-class passengers, these fees can be up to four times higher.

This new tax will apply to tickets sold from April 1, 2026, and will begin to be implemented starting October 1, 2026. The revenue collected will be used to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived from waste oils and agricultural products. With this step, Singapore plans to become the first country to collect a direct green fuel tax from passengers and aims to increase the sustainable fuel usage rate to 3–5 percent by 2030.
