Research: Caffeine consumption reduces Alzheimer's risk
According to a scientific study conducted in France, moderate daily caffeine consumption reduces the risk of dementia progression.
Scientists continue to conduct research for the treatment of Alzheimer's, one of the most serious diseases of our age. A recent study has identified a link between caffeine intake and cerebrospinal fluid markers of Alzheimer's disease.
Within the scope of the research published in the journal 'Alzheimer's & Dementia' and conducted in France, data from patients diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's between 2010 and 2015 were examined.
The research determined that there is a link between caffeine consumption and cerebrospinal fluid markers that indicate Alzheimer's.
In the study, clinical evaluations of 263 people over the age of 70 were performed, and the consumption amounts of caffeine-containing foods such as coffee, chocolate, tea, and carbonated drinks were examined. Participants were also asked for MRI scans and blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples.
Those who consumed an average of slightly more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day were placed in the 'low' caffeine group, while those who consumed more were evaluated in the 'high' caffeine group.
According to the results of the research, it was observed that lower caffeine consumption increases the risk of mild cognitive decline associated with memory problems. It was determined that those in the low caffeine group were two and a half times more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's or mild cognitive impairment.
