CHP zoning commission member detained
Engin Yağcılar, a lawyer and CHP municipal council member serving on the Edirne Municipality's zoning commission, has been detained by police on allegations of demanding 200,000 euros from a contractor in exchange for zoning procedures.
Nazmi Ö. (72), who has been involved in construction work in Edirne for a long time, applied to the provincial police department and recounted his experience. According to Nazmi Ö.'s claim, when he requested a permit renewal in 2016 for a construction project in the Kavgaz area for which he had received a permit in 2013, he received a negative response from the municipality. After being told that the building was too close to the road and needed to be demolished, the construction could not proceed for years.
Nazmi Ö. stated that on August 17, he was called by lawyer Engin Yağcılar, whom he knew previously, and that they met at a cafe near the Edirne Courthouse after Yağcılar told him he was the head of the municipality's zoning commission and could obtain a permit for the building. He alleged that during the meeting, Yağcılar demanded 200,000 euros and wanted to receive the money in Bulgaria.
Following Nazmi Ö.'s complaint, communication monitoring and technical surveillance operations were initiated under the instruction of the prosecutor's office.
OPERATION BEGAN AFTER MOSQUE MEETING
Following a second meeting held at the Üç Şerefeli Mosque on September 1, police teams detained Engin Yağcılar. It was learned that this meeting was recorded with audio and video. During searches conducted at Yağcılar's home and office, four computers, two notebooks, and five pages of various documents were seized for examination.
It was stated that Engin Yağcılar, who is in custody, exercised his right to remain silent during police questioning. Additionally, an investigation has been opened regarding the laundering of assets derived from crime under Article 282 of the Turkish Penal Code. It was noted that relevant units have begun work to prepare a MASAK report.
