He killed his cousin who abducted his sister: Trial begins

The incident occurred on May 15, 2025, at a second-hand furniture store on Talimhane Street in the 19 Mayıs neighborhood of the İlkadım district. According to allegations, M.T. (16) shot his cousin, Okan Doğan Torun (24), in the chest with a handgun at the workplace where he had come to speak with his father about the marriage after abducting his sister. Wounded, Okan Doğan Torun fled and took refuge in a bookstore.

Meanwhile, M.T., who was chasing him with a gun in his hand, opened fire again. One of the bullets hit D.A., who was sitting in front of the workplace, in the waist. The wounded were taken to Samsun Training and Research Hospital and Gazi State Hospital. Despite medical intervention, Okan Doğan Torun could not be saved. M.T., who was caught by the Public Security Teams shortly after the incident, was handed over to the teams of the Samsun Police Department's Juvenile Branch. It was alleged that the father, H.İ.T. (48), had his son shoot his nephew, Gökhan Doğan Torun, who had abducted his daughter. The father was also taken into custody on charges of inciting the crime. After their interrogations at the police station, the father and son were referred to the courthouse on May 16, arrested, and sent to prison.

The first hearing of the case filed against the father and son at the Samsun 4th High Criminal Court was held today. During the hearing, the defendants, complainants, and witnesses were heard. In his statement, the detained defendant M.T. said, "Okan had abducted my sister. He had beaten my brother before. He came to the shop a day after abducting my sister; we wanted to talk, but an argument broke out. I lost myself, I lost my consciousness, I fired. He pushed me while I was holding the gun, I hit the wall, he ran away, I followed him. The gun went off while I was pulling it toward the ground; I don't remember. My father came after me and said, 'What have you done?' My father did not tell me to shoot. I fired at Okan without being influenced by anyone; I regret it. It was a gun left by my grandfather; my father did not know I was carrying a gun."

The detained defendant father, H.İ.T., stated in his testimony, "I did not incite anyone, I did not have anyone shot. Okan abducted my daughter on May 14. My brother Şerif called me and brought the girl back, and I said, 'Come and ask for her hand tomorrow.' He loved my daughter, but I did not consent to this marriage. We were talking on the day of the incident, and an argument broke out. Okan had beaten my younger son before. When voices were raised, M. came and fired two shots. Okan ran away, and M. followed him. I heard one gunshot. I did not hold anyone, I did not say 'shoot.' I didn't even see the gun. I request my release under judicial control."

D.A., who was accidentally shot in the incident, said in court, "I am a complainant, I am a victim. I heard the sound of 'shoot, shoot,' and I looked to see someone chasing someone else. There was a 'pop' sound of a gun, and I was hit. The bullet shattered my intestines and lodged in the bone in my hip. I have been in pain for 6 months. Pregnant women were passing by on the street; the street was crowded. I lifted my head and was shot. I don't know anyone; I was just passing by. I had gone outside to smoke a cigarette."

The father of the deceased, Okan Doğan Torun, Şerif Torun, stated, "I am very ashamed of such an incident. Okan and M. loved each other. I was not aware of the abduction, but I consented to their marriage. I took the girl and brought her to my brother. We were preparing for the marriage proposal. They called my son to talk and had him shot. May God not let any parent experience such pain. I am a complainant."

The brother-in-law of the deceased, Murat T., testified, "M.T. fired at Okan's chest from a distance of one meter. While I wanted to intervene, his father held me and said, 'Shoot him, kill him.' Then he fired the second shot. Okan ran outside, and his father shouted, 'Run after him, shoot him.'"

M.T. (19), the young woman who was preparing for marriage and whose lover was killed by her brother, said, "Okan called me and wanted to meet. I was hesitant to go, but he forced me into the vehicle. He took me to Tekkeköy and made me turn off my phone. When I turned the phone on and my father called, I told him that I loved Okan and wanted to marry him. Then I talked to my father; my father had accepted our marriage. My father was always behind me. I went to Okan's funeral and cried."

The court decided to continue the detention of the father and son and adjourned the hearing to a later date.
