‘The Coasts Belong to the People’ protest in Gümüşlük completes its 9th week

The “The Coasts Belong to the People” protest, organized every Sunday by the Gümüşlük Forum at the Bodrum Gümüşlük Public Beach, completed its 9th week with the gathering held on Sunday, August 23.

Forum members have been coming together at the Gümüşlük Public Beach since June 28 to emphasize that the coastline and shores are common public spaces. In the latest protest, they demanded that access to the coast not be obstructed and that the public nature of the beach be protected.

Reminding authorities of Article 43 of the Constitution of the Republic of Turkey regarding the protection of coasts, the protesters called out: “Article 43 of the Constitution is clear. The Court of Cassation ruling is clear. The public nature of the coasts is clear. Listen to the Court of Cassation, end the occupation.”

In a statement made by the forum members, it was stated: “We have been resisting for over two months to ensure that the Gümüşlük Public Beach remains open for public use. We no longer want statements, empty words, or stalling; we want the law to be enforced and concrete results.”

Addressing the authorized institutions, the citizens demanded an end to practices that prevent public access to the coast. The statement concluded: “The coast of Gümüşlük is not a subject for negotiation. The coasts belong to the people, and they will remain for the people.”
