Teachers who drank alcohol at school in İzmir suspended
In the Bornova district of İzmir, school administrators and teachers who popped champagne in the schoolyard and consumed alcohol inside a middle school have been suspended from duty.
Following footage from a graduation ceremony at Bornova Yahya Kemal Beyatlı Middle School last June, in which a person identified as a physical education teacher was seen popping champagne in the schoolyard, an investigation was launched by the İzmir Provincial Directorate of National Education. After the controversial images from the school, a new video emerged. In the footage, teachers were seen dancing and drinking champagne inside the school. The images of teachers consuming alcohol inside the school were also met with backlash from parents.
THEY WERE SUSPENDED
Following the investigation launched by the İzmir Provincial Directorate of National Education, 10 educators—6 teachers and 4 school administrators—seen in the footage were suspended from duty. The statement issued included the following: "Regarding the images reflected in the press concerning the event that took place on June 6, 2024, at Yahya Kemal Beyatlı Middle School in the Bornova district of our province, a suspension measure has been applied to the school administration and the teachers appearing in the footage. Respectfully announced to the public."
