Burcu Köksal’s WhatsApp ‘status’ updates bring allegations of cronyism and staffing issues to the fore

“Status” updates allegedly posted from the WhatsApp account of Afyonkarahisar Mayor Burcu Köksal have brought allegations regarding staffing requests, reassignments, and internal institutional disputes within the municipality to the agenda.
It is claimed that private messages sent to Köksal, who resigned from the CHP in May and joined the AKP, along with certain declassification notes, were posted one after another as status updates on her account. The posts drew attention for including requests for the hiring of relatives and statements regarding the reassignment of personnel.
One of the messages in the images read,“Mr. Mayor, I am sure you will place my son in a suitable position.” Another post contained the words, “My son says he will resign on Monday; I will respect whatever decision you make.” These remarks were visible in the posts.
The posts included not only staffing requests but also allegations regarding tensions between municipal employees and certain departments. It was alleged that some personnel were transferred to different units, that factions had formed among managers, and that political positioning within the municipality was being debated.
The presence of phrases such as “We were and are supporters of Burcu Köksal” and “Those who say Burcu Köksal will be gone soon...” in the texts in question has sparked discussions regarding the balance of power within the municipality following her party change.
Another notable post included the note, “The person who sent this message is an assistant manager at YÜNTAŞ.” This note led to assessments that the messages might have been prepared for the purpose of recording the identity of the sender or for sharing with third parties.
It remains unclear whether the images were shared as status updates by mistake. The controversy has once again brought the topics of alleged cronyism in municipalities and transparency in local government to the forefront.
