New immigration policy from Trump: Detention center sparks controversy

U.S. President Donald Trump plans to open a new immigrant detention center at an abandoned military airfield in southern Florida. This facility, which spans 77 thousand acres, is designed to have a capacity of up to 5 thousand people.

The White House describes this facility as a “completely isolated” structure that “provides maximum deterrence.”

The location of the center is drawing attention because it is situated in the middle of the Everglades, a semi-tropical wetland in Florida famous for its dangerous alligators and pythons. Due to these features, the center, which has been dubbed “Alcatraz with Alligators” by the public, has sparked controversy both for its geographical location and the symbolic meaning it carries.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt emphasized the center's location, stating, “There is only one road leading there, and only a one-way flight out. This will be a place with no escape for dangerous criminals who enter the country illegally.” Levitt noted that this center would play an important deterrent role in preventing human smuggling.
