RTÜK fines Halk TV and Koza TV
Halk TV and Koza TV have been fined 1 percent of their revenue by RTÜK for allegedly violating a broadcast ban while reporting on claims regarding a private care center in Batman. The decision has reignited debates over press freedom.
The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has imposed administrative fines on Halk TV and Koza TV for covering allegations of mistreatment at a private care center in Batman during their news bulletins on June 19-20. The broadcasts in question featured a parliamentary question submitted by DEM Party Batman MP Zeynep Oduncu Kutevi regarding the center, but they violated a broadcast ban issued by the Batman 2nd Criminal Judgeship of Peace on June 3. Upon the determination of this violation, both channels were fined 1 percent of their respective revenues.
Tuncay Keser, an RTÜK member appointed from the CHP quota, reacted to the penalty decision via social media. In his statement, Keser made the following assessments:
"Maintaining a very sensitive, measured, and equal stance in interventions against the press is a fundamental requirement for press freedom and pluralism. Broadcast ban decisions with indefinite scope and duration eliminate the press's right to report and the public's right to be informed.
In this context, it is essential to first enact a legal regulation that defines the scope, duration, and conditions for the implementation of broadcast bans, while protecting the boundaries of reporting."
