Children's screen time negatively affects brain development

A comprehensive study conducted in China has revealed that children who spend excessive time with devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and televisions have lower IQ levels and smaller brain volumes compared to other children. The research also draws attention to the importance of physical activities. It was determined that children who engage in sports and are active have larger brain volumes and perform better in cognitive abilities.

RESEARCH FINDINGS

In the study, which utilized data collected from across Europe, the screen time, IQ levels, and physical activity habits of thousands of children were examined. The results showed that children's leisure activities have a direct impact on intelligence development and brain structure.

The research, published in the journal Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, emphasizes the importance of carefully managing children's media usage and increasing physical activity.

Scientists point out that excessive screen usage can have lasting effects on children's long-term cognitive development. It is noted that screen addiction can negatively impact children's academic and social lives.

Professor of Psychology Sir Cary Cooper from the University of Manchester stated that digital devices prevent children from acquiring social and non-verbal communication skills. Cooper said, "Children become dependent on these devices and lose their ability to communicate with people in real life. This negatively affects their social development."
