In a study conducted on prairie voles, researchers observed a significant increase in levels of dopamine, known as the "pleasure hormone," in the brains of rodents that sought out and reunited with their partners.

However, it was determined that these monogamous rodents experienced a decrease in dopamine levels after being separated from their partners for a long period.

According to Independent Türkçe's report from the scientific journal Current Biology, the study published on January 12 noted that prairie voles separated from their partners for 4 weeks experienced a significant drop in dopamine levels.

Zoe Donaldson from the University of Colorado Boulder stated that this change is focused on "reducing the pain of separation."

The neuroscientist, who is one of the authors of the study, said, "After this change in dopamine dynamics, prairie voles are able to find another partner and bond again. However, they cannot do this while their old relationship is still ongoing."

Donaldson also said that this situation does not show that the prairie voles have forgotten their partners, but rather that the bond between the pair has lost its value.

Stating that the findings are also enlightening for human relationships, the scientist pointed to the effect of dopamine signals on strengthening and maintaining bonds, saying, "Taking steps to ensure this remains robust also increases the satisfaction partners feel in their relationships."

Lead author of the study, Anne Pierce, said, "When we are with our partner, more dopamine is pumped into the brain's reward center compared to when we spend time with a stranger."

Donaldson also expressed that with increased research in this field, support could be provided to people who grieve for a long time to help them accept their loss and reconnect with life.
